Hemp Yarn

Hemp Yarn – Weaving Sustainability & Empowerment, One Thread at a Time

What if a simple strand of yarn could transform lives, revive ancient traditions, and heal the planet?
That’s the promise of hemp yarn from Hemp Foundation.

In the Himalayan villages of Uttarakhand, our journey begins with more than just plants—it begins with people. As men migrate to cities for work, women are left to care for land and legacy. Hemp has become their thread of hope, empowerment, and change.

Why Hemp Yarn?

Hemp is one of the most sustainable fibers on Earth. It:

  • Grows without pesticides

  • Requires minimal water

  • Regenerates soil

  • Absorbs more COâ‚‚ than trees

  • Is 100% biodegradable

Yarn That Empowers

Every skein of yarn carries the strength of Himalayan women. By turning local hemp into high-quality yarn, these women are reviving livelihoods and restoring balance to their communities.

With every purchase, you’re not just choosing a product—you’re becoming part of a movement that brings dignity, income, and hope back to remote villages.

But beyond its environmental superpowers, hemp yarn is naturally strong, antimicrobial, breathable, and incredibly versatile. From fashion to home textiles, it outlasts conventional fibers—naturally.

A Yarn with Purpose, From the Heart of the Himalayas

Choosing our hemp yarn isn’t just about quality—it’s about impact. You’re investing in:

  • Pure, organic fiber from one of the most pristine regions on Earth

  • Fair trade and economic stability for Himalayan communities

  • Women-led transformation that’s redefining rural empowerment

Make your next project sustainable, ethical, and empowering—start with Himalayan hemp yarn. Let’s spin a better future, together.

From Himalayan Soil to Your Hands: Our Yarn-Making Process

  • Our hemp yarn is born in the mineral-rich soils of Uttarakhand, where organic farming is a way of life, not a trend.

Step-by-step, here’s how our yarn is made:

    1. Organic Cultivation: Hemp is grown using traditional Himalayan methods with no harmful chemicals.

    2. Natural Retting: After harvest, stalks are retted naturally to separate the bast fibers.

    3. Fiber Extraction: Using a decorticator, we separate bast fibers from the woody core.

    4. Refining: The fibers undergo scutching and hackling to remove impurities.

    5. Spinning:

      • Dry spinning for coarse, rugged yarn

      • Wet spinning for smooth, linen-like yarn

    6. Final Touches: Drawing and doubling processes create a uniform finish and desired finesse.

We ensure every step honors the environment and uplifts our local farming communities.

Let’s start now. One thread at a time.

What Makes Our Hemp Yarn from Rudraprayag Truly Unique?

🌿 The Inimitable Himalayan Advantage

The Himalayan terrain isn’t just beautiful—it’s fertile, untouched, and sacred. That’s why our hemp yarn from Rudraprayag is among the purest on Earth. Every strand is the product of:

  • Soil enriched naturally by fallen foliage and grazing livestock

  • Crisp, clean mountain air that nurtures every plant

  • Traditional farming wisdom, honed over generations and enhanced with thoughtful technology

This unique environment gives rise to strong bast fibers, which we transform into premium-grade hemp yarn—natural, resilient, and responsibly made.

100% Organic Farming

Uttarakhand is the 1st (and the only!) state in the country to have passed the Organic Agriculture Act (2019). With that, all farming in the state is now completely organic. No chemicals. No fertilizers.

The hemp from which we derive our yarn, is grown 100% organically in Rudraprayag.

How do we ensure good yield without artificial support? With the generational wisdom of the local farmers.

These aren’t hollow claims. We have an official organic certification from a center accredited by Agriculture and Processed Food Export Development Authority (APEDA), GOI.

🏔 Supporting Local Communities in Rudraprayag

Growing high-quality hemp is only part of the story. We’re also rebuilding local economies that were left in limbo after hemp farming was restricted for decades.

Now, with global demand rising, Hemp Foundation serves as the bridge between local farmers and international buyers. We provide:

  • Fair, stable income to families in remote villages

  • Consistent market access for farmers who once had none

  • A reason for men and women to stay rooted in their communities

This is rural revival through sustainable trade—not charity, but empowerment through purpose.

👩‍🌾 Women at the Heart of Hemp Empowerment

In Rudraprayag, traditional gender roles often kept women at the margins. But that’s changing.

Women are the driving force behind our hemp ecosystem. From cultivation to processing, packaging to logistics—they play an integral role in every step.

And the impact is profound:

  • Women gain financial independence

  • Households see improved education, nutrition, and health

  • Communities move towards greater gender equity

This is more than just yarn. It’s a movement woven by women, shaping a future where everyone thrives.

Hemp yarns are made from the bast fiber available from the outer layer of hemp stalks. Hemp plants meant for fiber use are usually planted close together to make them grow tall with little or no branches. They get harvested as soon as the seeds start coming. The harvested hemp stalks are left on the fields for retting. That is a process to naturally break down the harder woody core of the stalks known as hurds so that the outer bast fibers soften. The next stage is to separate the bast fibers from the hurds. A machine called the decorticator often gets used for that. Then there is scutching and hackling. Both are processes to refine the separation of the bast from the hurds. The bast fibers are then roved or twisted to strengthen them further. Then comes the spinning to produce the yarns. There are two spinning processes for hemp yarns: dry and wet. Dry spinning is for coarser yarns while wet spinning is for producing fine linen-like yarns. Usually, the shorter fibers known as tow are dry-spun and the longer line fibers are wet-spun. It is possible to spin hemp yarn manually using spindles. But for large commercial crops, machine spinning is more the norm. In mechanical spinning, the roved fiber gets boiled in caustic soda and bleached with hydrogen peroxide for finer quality yarns. The processes called doubling and drawing play an important role in determining the finesse of the yarn. At Hemp Foundation, we pay full respect to the traditional wisdom of the local farming families of Rudraprayag, using the machines only to empower them with faster production of finer yarns. The combination of local expertise and new technology makes Hemp Foundation the chosen hemp yarn supplier for the majority of hemp importers in the world.

Hemp yarns are naturally strong and durable. Our hemp yarn is more so. How? Because the hemp we use is grown in the Himalayan region, where the soil is rich in minerals, and the climate is perfect for hemp farming. Plus, the plants are nurtured by farmers with years of experience in organic farming. This results in yarns that are among the strongest and most durable in the world.
