Hemp Yarn

We can Make a Difference, Let's Start Now

Uttarakhand has seen mass migration and most of the villages are either uninhabited or full of old men, women and children as male members have moved to cities in search of jobs. Though these families have small farms they don’t do farming as animals destroys their crops. 80% of the farmers have left farming in the hills of Uttarakhand. Hemp Foundation is one of the most trusted group of Hemp yarn wholesale.

We want to change this problem in an opportunity for these people. Though logistics is very hard, due to unmaintained mountain roads traveling to the nearest market or city is a nightmare. Practically no industry exists in these mountains. We travelled to dozens of remote mountains, trained these great women in their traditional craft of weaving, sewing, accessory making and provide them jobs and above all an identity.

We have created a value chain and involved hundreds of women in farming (hemp farming is less labour intensive) , retting of hemp plants, degumming, carding, sewing, handlooms etc. We believe that women are like the roots of the tress, if you empower a woman she will empower an entire community around her. We train them in marketing, quality control etc. and give them platform to sell their products at fair price.

Every inch of fabric or clothing on these pages comes from beautiful remote Himalayan villages of Uttarakhand, India made by love and care by these hard working women. These women from mountains are already very beautiful in appearance and at heart but now they are making the world a better place by promoting the most sustainable plant on earth. With every purchase on this website, you spread love and lessen your carbon footprint.

What Is So Special About Hemp Yarns from, Rudraprayag Uttarakhand?

THE INIMITABLE HIMALYAN TERRAIN

The Himalayan terrain has no match anywhere in the world. Hemp is a natural vegetation of that terrain – winking at you from here and there on the hillsides and the fringes of cultivated fields. When natural vegetation gets tended by experienced farmers, amazingly healthy plants yield bast fibers unmatched in their quality. When you process the yarn from those bast fibers using minimally invasive technology, hemp yarns of the best possible quality is what you get.

That is where our hemp grows. The natural minerals of the soil nourish our plants. Fallen foliage on the ground and the dung of grazing animals supply all the extra nourishment they need. The clean air helps our plants to breathe healthy.

100% ORGANIC FARMING

Uttarakhand has outlawed the use of fertilizers and other agricultural chemicals. All farming in the state is fully organic. Rudraprayag is a district in this state where most of our hemp grows organically. Local farmers rich with insights on organic farming accumulated through generations ensure the health of our plants.

We also have organic certification from a center accredited by the Agriculture and Processed Food Export Development Authority (APEDA), Government of India.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Hemp Foundation has a social mission: end poverty and hunger in Rudraprayag. We enable the farming families of the district to link their products to the global market where demand for hemp and products derived from it is on a continual rise.
These families struggled to survive when hemp and its products got banned in India. The Himalayan terrain where they live is suitable for just a few crops with hemp being one of them. The state got permission to grow it, but where to sell?
Seasonal migration in search of income became the rule. The age-old texture of these farming communities was breaking down. Family life suffered due to the long absence of its male members. Poverty and starvation did not end even then.
Then, Hemp Foundation happened. A social enterprise determined to enable farming families of Rudraprayag to earn a decent living. We respect the local wisdom of organic farming and introduce new technology only where it makes sense. We connect their harvest and the products derived from it with the global market. These families are smiling now, and that is our greatest reward.

TOWARDS AN EQUITABLE FUTURE

We dream of an equitable and inclusive future where women and men, girls and boys, have equal opportunities to develop their full potential as human individuals. We make sure that women from Rudraprayag’s farming families are equal partners in the change that we are trying to bring to the district.

Involved in various income-earning initiatives of Hemp Foundation, the women of Rudraprayag are finding a voice. They have started participating in decision-making processes. The social rubric of Rudraprayag is still changing – to evolve as a more gender-just social space.

Hemp yarns are made from the bast fiber available from the outer layer of hemp stalks. Hemp plants meant for fiber use are usually planted close together to make them grow tall with little or no branches. They get harvested as soon as the seeds start coming. The harvested hemp stalks are left on the fields for retting. That is a process to naturally break down the harder woody core of the stalks known as hurds so that the outer bast fibers soften. The next stage is to separate the bast fibers from the hurds. A machine called the decorticator often gets used for that. Then there is scutching and hackling. Both are processes to refine the separation of the bast from the hurds. The bast fibers are then roved or twisted to strengthen them further. Then comes the spinning to produce the yarns. There are two spinning processes for hemp yarns: dry and wet. Dry spinning is for coarser yarns while wet spinning is for producing fine linen-like yarns. Usually, the shorter fibers known as tow are dry-spun and the longer line fibers are wet-spun. It is possible to spin hemp yarn manually using spindles. But for large commercial crops, machine spinning is more the norm. In mechanical spinning, the roved fiber gets boiled in caustic soda and bleached with hydrogen peroxide for finer quality yarns. The processes called doubling and drawing play an important role in determining the finesse of the yarn. At Hemp Foundation, we pay full respect to the traditional wisdom of the local farming families of Rudraprayag, using the machines only to empower them with faster production of finer yarns. The combination of local expertise and new technology makes Hemp Foundation the chosen hemp yarn supplier for the majority of hemp importers in the world.

Hemp yarns naturally have exceptional tensile strength and outlive cotton in durability. Fabrics made of hemp yarns retain their shape better than cotton and most other natural yarns. Beyond these common qualities, the comparative strength of hemp yarns produced in different plantations depends on the health of the plants. Our hemp grown in the Himalayan district of Rudraprayag in Uttarakhand, India. Hemp is natural to this region and our plants thrive in the mineral-rich Himalayan soil. The climate of Rudraprayag is ideal for hemp cultivation. The local farmers are traditional experts in the organic farming of hemp. The air is therapeutically pure. The shed leaves of plants and the excreta of grazing animals add to the nutritious profile of the soil. The farmers tend our plants not just with their experiences insights, but also with loving care. A healthy hemp crop means freedom from poverty and hunger for them. The combination of these unmatched factors naturally produces the healthiest of hemp plants. That makes the yarns we produce from these plants the strongest in the world. We have lab reports to verify their strength and durability. We really are the best hemp yarn manufacturers you could partner with.
