We want to change this problem in an opportunity for these people. Though logistics is very hard, due to unmaintained mountain roads traveling to the nearest market or city is a nightmare. Practically no industry exists in these mountains. We travelled to dozens of remote mountains, trained these great women in their traditional craft of weaving, sewing, accessory making and provide them jobs and above all an identity.

We have created a value chain and involved hundreds of women in farming (hemp farming is less labour intensive) , retting of hemp plants, degumming, carding, sewing, handlooms etc. We believe that women are like the roots of the tress, if you empower a woman she will empower an entire community around her. We train them in marketing, quality control etc. and give them platform to sell their products at fair price.

Every inch of fabric or clothing on these pages comes from beautiful remote Himalayan villages of Uttarakhand, India made by love and care by these hard working women. These women from mountains are already very beautiful in appearance and at heart but now they are making the world a better place by promoting the most sustainable plant on earth.

Hemp paper is a more eco-friendly option compared to conventional paper. First of all, the production cycle of hemp paper is much shorter than conventional paper. It takes only about 4 to 5 months to be produced. This means that hemp paper production needs less water resources and negligible use of pesticides and fertilizers. On the other hand, the conventional paper is produced from trees. Unfortunately, it would need the cutting 20-year-old trees to make conventional paper causing widespread deforestation. Since hemp paper has a shorter production cycle it can be easily regrown and doesn’t result in deforestation.
Hemp paper owes its resilient strength to its high cellulose content. Trees contain 30% cellulose and require toxic chemicals to process it into water. On the other hand, hemp plants contain almost 85% cellulose. When hemp fibre is blended with wood or other materials it attains much higher resilience than tree paper. In fact, around 100 AD the Chinese used hemp to make the first paper. And hemp fibre was the principal raw-material that was used to make paper till around the mid 1800’s.
Using hemp paper offers several advantages like: ● Hemp paper does not deteriorate like tree paper and it doesn’t become yellow like tree paper. ● Hemp paper can be produced much faster than regular paper. ● Hemp paper doesn’t need toxic chemicals during its processing. ● It is very strong and durable due to its high cellulose content. ● Hemp paper can be recycled up to eight times while tree paper can only be recycled twice or thrice. ● The usage of hemp paper helps prevent deforestation. ● Hemp paper is highly versatile and can be used in a variety of ways.
Hemp paper is durable, resilient, and strong. It can be used in a variety of ways including: ● Hemp paper doesn’t yellow or crack easily like regular paper and is perfect for stationary or art paper ● Hemp paper can be used for documents that need to be stored for a longer duration due to its long life ● It can be also to make different items including tea bags, filtration papers, diapers, rolling paper, and banknotes.
According to the NDPS—National Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act of India, each state government has the freedom to decide its own policy regarding the cultivation of hemp with the condition that they are able to provide “verifiable scientific and operational evidence” that the hemp so cultivated is not misused. Along with this, the states also have to follow strict guidelines defined by the Central Government of India. Currently only two states of India—Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand have developed policies regarding the legal cultivation of hemp in India. The hemp used by Hemp Foundation is cultivated legally in Uttarakhand, in Northern India.
