Hemp Looks To Steal From Celebrities And Ace Designers

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Rihanna, Kristen Steward, Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, and Bella Hadid: what’s common here? These A-listers have never been shy of showing how much they love the leaf. Their weed-themed wardrobes have always been the talk of the town.

But is this love just limited to themed clothing and accessories?

Apparently not.

There has been more than one occasion when celebrities have spoken in support of hemp clothing. Top brands are also rolling out their hemp blend collections.

Now, this got me wondering whether our celebs are just about the talk, or do they actually walk the walk too?

Well, after several hours of digging deep in the alleyways of fashion tabloids and magazines, I have found some hot and some cool hemp looks that celebrities have donned in the past.

Check out how these celebs aced green fashion and get inspired to update your wardrobe too.

Woody Harrelson

Okay, I’ll be honest here. I never considered Woody Harrelson as a fashion icon. I just never really got that kind of a vibe from The Messenger star.

But he did turn out to be a fashion icon after his much-talked-about appearance at the 1997 Golden Globe Awards.

Just years after his debut in White Men Can’t Jump (1992), he was nominated for the Golden Globe, 1997 for The People vs. Larry Flynt. He also got an Oscar nomination for the film.

However, what made more headlines than his nominations was the fact that he walked the red carpet clad in an all-white tuxedo made of hemp.

He is, in fact, the OG of hemp fashion, I must say.

While Harrelson didn’t take home an award that night, he did steal the hearts of hemp enthusiasts from across the world.

And it wasn’t just a lone attempt at doing good for the environment. The actor has been actively vocal about promoting hemp and for other environmental concerns too.

Livia Firth

January 2010 Golden Globe awards was a first of its kind event. Livia Firth and Lucy Siegl had just started their efforts to make the red carpets go green. That’s the year when the Green Carpet Challenge first started.

Livia Firth has ever since been a pioneering personality in pushing celebrities and designers to take a step towards a greener fashion. And she has been leading the movement herself.

Among other sustainable fabrics that got to hit the red carpets of top award shows after the challenge took off was hemp.

Livia was seen wearing a detachable Manila hemp skirt with a Stella McCartney gown.

Of course, the reclaimed vintage beads on the gown are a sight to behold, but the fact that the skirt is all-hemp made sustainable fashion lovers from across the globe love her a little more.

Mara Hoffman

In the 2015 New York Fashion Week, when Mara Hoffman debuted her Spring Collection, her prints caught people’s eyes.

At that time, it felt like the designer was a little too obsessed with Mary Jane. Now, that could have pot-tentially landed her in trouble at that time.

But what she did in 2019 landed her on this list. And, of course, she carved a place in our hearts with her love for cannabis.

Her Spring 2019 Collection had hemp clothes. And not just one, but many.

The prints were cool and the designs classy. Perfect for a sunny summer day where you just want to look pretty and keep doing good for the environment while you are at it.

Like this Mischa dress from her collection in red hemp is perfect proof that hemp isn’t for just the hippies anymore.

It is quickly making its way into high street fashion, and Mara Hoffman sure deserves due credit for making that happen.

Alicia Silverstone

Alicia Silverstone has been an advocate of all things eco-friendly for a long time.

The vegan actress is also an animal rights advocate, and her campaign with PETA saying she’d just be in her own skin (literally!) instead of wearing wool grabbed a lot of eyeballs.

The actress, author, and animal rights advocate, on her own blog, the kind life, revealed her love for hemp clothing.

In one of her posts about sustainable summer dresses, she pointed her fans and readers towards a beautiful summer dress from Vesta Studio.

She went on to say that she has been wearing the dress quite frequently since she got it home.

[I’m sure the fact that hemp is a strong fabric and shows little signs of wear and tear even after regular washing has got something to do with this.]

While she said she had the dress in two colors — black and cream — I couldn’t find pictures of her in the dress.

However, she was kind enough to direct the readers to where they can get the dress from. And here’s a picture of what is one of Alicia’s favorite sustainable summer dresses, made from hemp.

Celebrities That We Want To See Clothed In Hemp Next

Now that we have seen some of our celebs take a step forward towards hemp, I’d accept that I’m greedy for more.

A lot of celebs have spoken in support of hemp clothing in the past, and some even went ahead to invest in hemp-based labels and fashion lines.

But we are yet to see them clad in the fabric that is being called the future of fashion.

Some of the names that I would definitely like to see sporting hemp clothing include:

Emma Watson

By portraying the perfect Miss Granger in the Harry Potter series to the ever so beautiful Belle in Beauty and the Beast, Emma Watson has been an international crush.

And she has also been extremely vocal about her concerns related to sustainability in fashion. She also went ahead to design sustainable clothing in association with brands like People Tree.

She also has a hemp clothing line called Pure Threads that she runs with Italian designer Alberta Ferretti.

While she is doing her bit from behind the stage, I’d love to see her sporting something made of hemp.

Willie Nelson

Even when hemp was widely misunderstood and associated with marijuana, country musician Willie Nelson started with Willie Nelson Hemp Collection, a clothing line consisting of fanny packs, ball caps, and t-shirts made of hemp.

During the launch of the label in 1992, Nelson even sent goody bags to several influential people, including Bill Clinton. (the then President-elect).

However, we are yet to see Willie Nelson sport a hemp t-shirt or cap out in public.

Or even if he did wear hemp clothes, the media turned a blind eye to the hemp-lovers efforts.

No matter what’s the reason, we still don’t have a known record of Willie Nelson wearing hemp, and that’s sure something I am looking forward to.

Seth Rogen

Seth Rogen partnered with Canopy Growth to build his own cannabis company, called Houseplant. Canopy Growth is a company that sells a wide range of cannabis products, including hemp clothing.

This collaboration happened in 2019.

And it did get my expectations high as to when I would be able to see the comedy actor wearing something made of hemp.

But as of now, I’ve not had the privilege of seeing that happening.

I’m sure the wait would be worth it, and we’d soon get to see a hot hemp look curtsey Seth Rogen.

Stella McCartney

Ace designer and Paul McCartney’s daughter, Stella McCartney, has been a luminary in the field of sustainable fashion.

She was even behind Livia Firth’s look at the 2010 Met Gala, which included a hemp skirt.

She has also been very particular about keeping her fashion line clean, green, and sustainable. While plenty of her models and celebrity clients must have worn hemp clothes designed by her, she is yet to wear one.

Bring Hemp From The Ramps And Red Carpets To Your Wardrobe

I understand why what’s on the runway isn’t always fit for the wardrobe. The outfits are sometimes outlandish, too extravagant, or impractical.

But that’s not the case with hemp fashion. It is perfect for parties, formal events, office wear, and even day-to-day wear. What’s more, you can even get hemp t-shirts that will make for comfortable nightwear.

These are some of the other advantages of hemp clothing that make it much-loved by the celebs too.

  • It is a strong fabric and doesn’t get ruined due to wear and tear.
  • Hemp protects you from the harmful UV rays of the sun and has a UPF of 50+.
  • Hemp clothes dry fast.
  • The hemp fabric can be dyed easily, and plenty of color options are available.
  • Hemp is a breathable fabric and, thus, is comfortable.
  • A lot of fabrics can be blended with hemp to give it a desirable look and feel. Hemp-cotton, hemp-silk, and hemp-linen are some popular blends.
  • Hemp is a carbon-negative crop, which means using hemp for clothing is also good for the environment.
  • Clothes made of hemp are biodegradable and won’t land in a landfill after their useful life.

Hemp Foundation’s own collection of hemp clothing is worth taking a look at.

And I have also curated a list of top brands that offer affordable, fashionable, and environment-friendly hemp clothing options that you can check out. (link to the article about hemp fashion brands.)

Towards A Better Tomorrow…

Celebrities have often dictated our fashion choices and preferences. And now that we are seeing our favorites advocating hemp, it’s time you jump on the bandwagon too.

Get inspired by the celebrity looks or experiment to create something of your own, and start contributing to the hemp revolution for global good.
